There are obviously many ways that wedding proposals happen, but who knew that after being proposed to, you’d have to do some proposing yourself? Asking your girls to stand by your side while you marry the love of your life is kind of a big deal, so treat it like one with one of these larger-than-life bridesmaid proposal ideas:

1. Bridesmaid Box

A bridesmaid box is probably the most popular type of bridesmaid proposal these days. Unlike some other ways, a box allows your bridesmaid, both near and far, to experience their proposal the same way. If you have quite a few bridesmaids that are far away, this might be a good idea!

What’s so great about bridesmaid boxes, is that you can customize them any way you want. You can go the budget route with lots of DIY elements, or make it extravagant with bubbly and other more lavish gifts. Either way, a bridesmaid box allows you to ask your friends to be a part of your wedding in a very unique and memorable way. Read more about what to include in your bridesmaid boxes here.

2. A Letter / Bridesmaid Card

Similar to a bridesmaid box, a letter is a really personal way to include everyone in the same way, regardless of where they live in the world. If popping the question in person makes you nervous, then this is probably a good way to go!

For a bridesmaid letter, it’s a great idea to include some fond memories you have with your friend and why you’d love for them to stand by your side on your big day. But, if you’re at a loss for words, here are some common bridesmaid proposal sayings to ask your friends to be a part of your wedding party:

  • I said yes to him. Now say yes to me!

  • All you need to do is show up! (and maybe some other… very small things)

  • He’s marrying me, but he’s stuck with both of us!

  • I can’t marry my Mr. without my sister.

  • I can’t say “I do” without you!

  • You’ve helped me through every other decision, let’s keep it going

  • I can’t tie the knot without you

  • I’ve got the guy, now I need my girls

  • Pop the bubbly, she’s getting a hubby

  • White dress, lace and pearls but I can’t do it without my girls.

  • Pop the champagne, she's changing her name!

  • You all are the ‘she’ to my ‘nanigans.’

  • I can’t even… without you

Follow any of the above sayings with “Will you be my bridesmaid?” are you’re good to go!

3. A Bridesmaid Poem

Another way to propose to your bridesmaids is with a poem. If you’re a wizard with the words, try to come up with a personalized poem (maybe we learned about haikus in grade school for a reason after all!) Here are a couple of tried and true poems that others have used to pop the question:

Something Blue Bridesmaid Poem

I need something old,

Something new,

Something borrowed,

Something blue,

But most importantly…

I need you!

Will you be my bridesmaid?

Keep Calm and Bridesmaid On

Don't panic, but I'm putting you on the spot.

As you know, I'm tying the knot.

Wearing a fluffy dress probably won't kill you,

So I'm asking you to be my bridesmaid; will you?

4. Tie the Knot Rings or Bracelets

Everyone loves a good pun, especially when it comes to weddings! Since you truly couldn’t tie the knot without your girls, why not give them some bling to let them know! Not only is this a great way to pop the “Will you be my bridesmaid?” question, but it’s also a great way to get your girls into formation with matching jewels for your bachelorette weekend or even wedding day!

5. “Will you Be My Bridesmaid Mug”

Gather up the whole group at your favorite coffee shop and bring along custom “Will You Be My Bridesmaid” Mugs to serve the coffee. Ask the barista ahead of time to serve their drinks in the mugs. If that’s too complicated, ask the barista to write the question on to-go cups. When the barista calls them when their drinks are ready, you could have them say something funny like “1 maid of honor coffee and 4 bridesmaids ready!”

6. Break Open Fortune Cookies

For this one, you’ll need to do some finagling since custom fortune cookies are hard to come by. But we promise it’ll be worth the extra effort. Coordinate with your favorite local Asian restaurant to get a custom “Will You Be My Bridesmaid?” message into a set of their fortune cookies. Then have the server bring them out at the end of your meal. The look on their faces will be priceless!

7. Scratch-Off Card

This one can be done in a group or separately. Since scratch-off cards are easy to mail, this will also work well for bridesmaids who aren’t close by. You can purchase pre-made scratch-off cards like these on amazon and then present them in a group setting (at a brunch for example), or mail them out individually to everyone you want in your bridal party.

8. A Workshop

Do a workshop in-person with the group. I had a friend who’s now-husband proposed at a workshop. He took my friend to a printing press and they learned how everything worked. Once they got their first piece pressed, she realized it said “Will you Marry Me” and he got down on one knee (swoon, right?). Try the same thing with your gals with any type of workshop. Some ideas include a floral workshop (so they can all learn how to make their own bouquets for your wedding), a calligraphy workshop (like one of the ones I host!), a candle making workshop, etc.

9. Host a Brunch or Dinner & Say it In Person

Sometimes it’s just easier to go the old-fashioned route. If none of the above float your boat, maybe hosting a brunch or dinner is the best way for you to break it to your gals. Telling them all in-person is an intimate way to propose the question...AND...it means you get to see their reactions all at once! I highly suggest filming it if you can!
